HISTORY
Based in Birmingham City Centre, Aston Water Polo Club are a team steeped in history within the Water Polo community.
Aston Water Polo (formerly Aston Birmingham Swimming Club), was established in 1895, in order to compete in the inaugural "Birmingham & District Swimming Association & Water Polo League". At the time Water Polo was a new and evolving sport, with early games being played with little to no rules, and injuries were common.
The early years of Aston's history were extremely successful, seeing the club win nine Division 1 titles (including 6 consecutive titles between 1909 and 1914), until the outbreak of World War 1 caused the competition to be halted between 1915 and 1919.
After the war, Aston struggled to regain its former glory, however the club still managed to win three Division 1 titles (1921, 1924 and 1925).
In 1948, Aston decided to compete in the new Midland Water Polo League, claiming the Senior League Championship for the first two years of competition.
Since then, the club has struggled to consistently compete at the higher levels of the Midland Water Polo League, ultimately seeing it relegated into the 3rd Division in the mid-2000's, where it has remained since, however the past few years have looked very promising for Aston, with the club obtaining 2nd place finishes in 2010, 2015 and 2019, as well as getting to the KO Cup Semi Final in 2013.
Following the COVID-19 Pandemic, Midland Water Polo League restructured to a 2 Division competition for the 2022 season. Aston finished joint 4th of the 7 teams that participated, and looked heavily into promoting younger players and re-instating our close links with Aston University Swimming and Water Polo club, who reformed their Water Polo team for the first time since 2018.
In 2023, Aston successfully won the Midland Water Polo League Knock Out Cup trophy, signifying their first silverware since 1997.
